Often times, experts tend to see alarms where others only seem to see fireworks. This was arguably the case with Shark Tank host Kevin O’Leary regarding Bitcoin. O’Leary was one of the first to worry about Bitcoin’s sustainability in early May. However, since then, the expert has found other details that he believes could be an opportunity for the cryptocurrency.

The sustainability of BTC, the dilemma to be resolved

One of the most leveled criticisms of Bitcoin is that mining requires a lot of energy. Even Tesla echoed this argument in May, when Elon Musk announced that accepting BTC as a payment method would no longer be possible. The reason? The same thing Kevin O’Leary mentioned about three weeks earlier, the sustainability issues.

However, over the weekend, O’Leary expressed that now this issue is an opportunity. In this regard, he predicted that a shift from Bitcoin miners to more sustainable forms of energy could fuel the cryptocurrency. Even significantly outperforming stocks over the next decade. “This is a big deal and a big opportunity, I’d rather see the opportunityO’Leary said.

What is needed for renewed institutional investment in Bitcoin, and with it overshooting stocks according to O’Leary

The fact that a fraction of the miners use non-renewable energy, like some Chinese miners still running on coal-based electricity, has kept several institutional investors from investing in BTC.

As such, O’Leary has made deals with miners who use sustainable forms of electricity, like the big miners at Texas-based wind farms. The latter is done to show that Bitcoin mining can be done in a sustainable way.

“We have to solve the problem of the institutional client. They want to invest in bitcoins. They can’t now, it’s a really strange situation, ”the investor said. O’Leary remains optimistic, however, that institutional investors will find a way to be creative to make this work. He also believes that once this hurdle is cleared, Bitcoin would be back on track to continue to outperform stocks in the future.

“I think over the next 10 years the Bitcoin asset itself will outperform the S&P. So if you think of an average of 7-8% over a decade on the S&P, I think Bitcoin would be 300-400 basis points higher. i really believe itO’Leary said.
